What is Seborrheic Dermatitis?
Seborrheic eczema or seborrheic dermatitis is a common type of skin disease that mainly affects the scalp but can also affect other areas of the body including face, chest, arms or legs. Seborrheic dermatitis causes flaking of the skin making it look flaky and scaly. One of the main indications of having this type of disease is itchy scalp.
Seborrheic dermatitis usually occurs in infants from birth to three months of age and adults aged 30 to 60 years. In infants, seborrheic dermatitis is also called cradle crap; while in adults, it is most commonly called dandruff.
Although seborrheic dermatitis is a harmless condition, it may cause moderate to severe discomfort to the person caused by itchy scalp. Another possible effect of this condition is temporary and sometime reoccurring hair loss. It can even result to permanent hair loss when hair follicles are extensively damaged.
For adults, seborrheic dermatitis treatment can be done with dandruff shampoos that are commercially available in the market. This dandruff shampoos should be thoroughly applied in the hair and scalp for at least five minutes for two to three times per week. While for infants, it is not advisable to use strong dandruff shampoo since this may cause irritation to baby’s skin. Mild baby shampoos can be used instead; this should be gently applied and massaged in the baby’s scalp.
